Job Description

Arbor Associates is hiring a dynamic Special Educator to join our team and support students in a Special Education Program. It is imperative that the candidate demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the middle school philosophy as well as the unique needs of middle school students. This position has a designated caseload of students on IEPs, servicing students with a variety of needs and abilities. The educator will also provide inclusion support, assist students in achieving their special education goals, evaluate students for eligibility/re-eligibility for special education services, generate reports, and participate in meetings. The special education teacher will be responsible for providing direct instruction, collaborating with other educators, and planning/co-planning to meet the diverse needs of their students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates a strong knowledge of program design, curriculum and instruction, and behavior management.
  • Support/Provide instruction in the inclusion setting
  • Complete academic assessments for evaluation meetings (initials, reevaluations, additional assessments) as needed
  • Facilitate special education meetings
  • Plan effective instructional strategies for adapting or modifying the general curriculum to meet the various needs of individual students 
  • Participate in curriculum development as required 
  • Participate in the development of, and oversee implementation of IEP'S for students eligible for special education 
  • Conduct academic assessments/evaluations of student abilities and needs and serves as a member of IEP meetings 
  • Collect and analyze student performance data to determine the extent to which student IEP goals and objectives are being met 
  • Assist students with both academic and social/emotional goals as stated in Individualized Education Plans 
  • Develop personal relationships with the student's parents or guardians and works to establish with them an understanding and cooperative relationship based on the student's individual needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to consult effectively with educational assistants, teachers, administration, and parents
  • Maintain the integrity of confidential information regarding students 
  • Understanding and familiarity with the Special Education process and regulations 
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education, instructional goals, and objectives. 
  • Do baseline testing to determine educational needs and develop a strategic plan to address weaknesses. 
  • Maintains accurate, complete records
  • Other duties as assigned by the building administrator


Job Requirements

DEGREE PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with students identified with specific learning and other disabilities
  • Experience writing Individualized Education Plans and progress reports Experience running Special Education Meetings preferred
  • ESPED experience preferred 
  • Wilson/Orton Gillingham training preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education License: Moderate Disabilities K-8.
  • Safety Care Training preferred (training will be provided if not previously completed).
  • Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement
